## Page title

Google builds the title shown in results automatically, and the page's title element is one input. Give every page a title that says what the page is, keep it short, make it different from other pages, and put the site name at the start or end. Google may use other text on the page instead if it fits better. The title should be in the same language and script as the page.

## Description

The text under a result is a snippet. Google builds it from the page and sometimes uses the page's meta description when it describes the page better. Write one short, accurate description per page. There is no fixed length; results are cut to fit the screen.

## Noindex

A noindex rule, as a meta tag or an HTTP header, tells Google to keep a page out of results. Use it for pages you do not want listed. The rule works only if the page is not blocked in robots.txt: if Google cannot fetch the page it never sees the rule, and the page can still appear when other sites link to it.

## What we check

On your home page we read: the title, the description, one main heading, the preferred address, whether the page asks search engines to skip it, the sitemap, and the language versions. We say found or not found on the page we read.

## Ask your web developer

Does each page have its own title and description? Is any page set to noindex by mistake after a redesign? Is a page you want hidden blocked in robots.txt instead of set to noindex?

## What we do not say

We do not rank sites, and we do not say where you appear in Google.
